Lali Mejia is a composer, percussionist, bandleader, producer, educator and designer, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela, she has built a multidisciplinary career that bridges music, cultural preservation, visual arts, and community engagement. She is the founder and band leader of Bululú, a Bay Area Latin ensemble known for its original compositions, diverse identity, inclusive LGBTQ+ community, and a majority of female band members. During her career as a musician, Lali toured and participated in numerous music festivals around the US, Caribbean, China and Japan playing alongside notable Venezuelan artists. Her compositions draw on Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-Caribbean musical traditions to reflect and respond to the contemporary experiences of Latino communities and the broader diaspora. Through music, performance, education and year-round cultural programming, Lali creates welcoming spaces where ancestral traditions become living practices of dialogue, belonging, collective joy, and community resilience. Lali has served as a panelist and speaker for the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Center for Cultural Innovation, KPFA, KCSM, and KQED Live programs.
